Program Schedule for 2022 Scholarship Process

Scholarship Program Intent


The OUTbio LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Scholarship Program is intended to encourage LGBTQ+ young adults to seek a career in STEM disciplines, with a focus on the life sciences. The scholarship supports all students regardless of gender or sexual diversity who have demonstrated leadership and/or involvement toward the advancement of LGBTQ+ diversity, equity and inclusion in their community. 


In 2022 OUTbio will award one student unrestricted scholarship funds of up to $5,000 to one graduating high school student or active student who will be attending a New England located 2-or 4-year college or technical/vocational school in the 2022-2023 academic year. The award will be based on responses to the questions below, references, and an interview.  Preference will be given to degrees that may lead to careers in human disease biology, drug discovery, research, and development or drug manufacturing.  


OUTbio will award the scholarship per academic year that will be provided as an unrestricted grant, intended to support tuition and other educational expenses.

​Application Process and Timeline
  1. Application deadline – June 15, 2022

  2. Application Review period and Interviews – July 15, 2022

    • Applicants will be ranked based on their academic and extracurricular history, intended field of study, quality of essay responses and video submissions.

    • Three Finalists will be invited to be interviewed by a member of the selection committee

  3. Scholarship winner(s) selected and notified – by August 5, 2022

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for the scholarship award, applicants must meet all requirements listed below.


  1. Must be a person who identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

  2. Must be 18 years or older at the time of award (5 Aug 2022).

  3. A minimum of a 3.0 GPA or have achieved a GED, and willing to provide a transcript.

  4. Be pursuing a degree in a life science discipline.   

  5. Be a student/accepted at an accredited secondary college/university in one of the following states: Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or Vermont (community college associate degree programs are accepted)

  6. Willing to submit the completed application requirements, including a video of yourself (see below).

  7. Agree to be profiled and have a picture on OUTbio's website and/or print materials.

Scholarship Application Guidelines

As part of the application process, you will be asked to provide information about yourself, your current school, post-secondary education plans, and other activities.   You’ll also be asked to provide brief essays answering 4 questions related to this scholarship, along with a letter of reference and a video submission.   The application components are listed below:

  6. Achievements, Honors, and Awards Received 

  7. Volunteer Work

  9. Essays – Please address 4 questions below in the essays (300 words maximum)

  10. Video Submission

  11. Letter of Reference – Include one letter of recommendation tailored to this scholarship. Recommendation letters must be written and signed by individuals other than family members.

  12. Signature

  13. Signature of a parent or guardian if the applicant is under the age of 18
